Set Design Our House - Model Box
The set design for ‘Our House’ the musical was conceived and imagined from the construction and development of this model box. The model box was constructed scale 1:25 and created from both handmade and 3D printed construction techniques. The purpose of the model box was to help the production team visualise the set design before it was construction. It also served as a reference for the scenic painters and makers when they constructed the set, to understand how every element looked and interacted with one another.

This project was an independent theoretical design project to explore large scale concert design. The design was centred around musician Dua Lipa and was set at Rod Laver Arena. The set design is a large speaker which visually flowed out into the audience, enabling the musician to be close to the audience. These renderings capture the colours, shapes, lighting and atmosphere of the design communicate what it would feel like to experience the concert.

Art Finishing - Shirt
The art finished shirt was inspired by a short story of a character who had a bike accident, breaking his arm, tearing his shirt and bleeding while he waited for help. Techniques for breaking down fabrics were applied to the shirt to create a look of irregular tear patterns from the accident. Patches of blood were applied around the torn areas to appear as if the blood was seeping through while the character was waiting for help. The textures and colours were exaggerated so when they are photographed or seen from a distance on stage could elicit a visceral feeling of an accident to the viewer.

Arielle Vlahiotis
Set and Costume Designer
Arielle is a zestful designer who completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Design and Production) at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) in 2020. She is determined to make visually engaging designs that entice audiences. In 2020, Arielle designed the set and costumes for dance pieces Nuti and Return To Normal and was the Set Designer for the musical Our House. At the VCA, Arielle has worked in the set, prop and costume workshops with her credits including Four Directions: First and Second Year Works (2019), On the Town (2019), DFLTLX (2019), F+++ing A (2019) and Peter Pan (2018).
In 2020, she was thrilled to intern with designer Christina Smith. Arielle hopes that you enjoy the work she has been part of creating and looks forward to seeing where the future takes her.
